Winter 2021: The Fire

Encounter

by Laureen Naik

In the wilderness you came
To set an earthen bush aflame
A great sign of your intent
To free us all from our Egypt

You came, You came and made a way

Your pillar of fire, Love’s light
In the darkness, there your heart’s sign
Made a path that was unknown
Lit by glory from heaven’s throne

You came, You came and made a way

You came again on the mount
Baal’s prophets bleeding, crying out
Elijah prayed, the fire came
All to You bowed, your Name proclaimed

You came, You came and made a way
Then he cried out in despair
Weeping, weighed down by earthly cares
You came not in quake or fire
But in your low hushed whispered lines

You came, You came and made a way

So will I, in just return
Allow for You to speak Your Word?
To come in Your chosen way
In fiery skies, a manger’s hay?

You came, You came and made a way

With my yes, I then can see
Your presence in simplicity
And hear the angels then proclaim
Good News, great joy, for us today

You came, You came and made a way
